SUP Gear Guide: What You Really Need Beyond the Board and Paddle

SUP Gear Guide: What You Really Need Beyond the Board and Paddle

Whether you’re a brand-new paddler or adding to your Hydrus quiver, knowing what gear you actually need makes every session smoother and safer. With so many gadgets, straps, and accessories on the market, it’s easy to overcomplicate things. Let’s simplify it. Here’s everything you really need to make the most of your paddleboarding adventures.

Leash: Your Lifeline on the Water

A leash keeps your board attached to you if you fall off, which means it’s one of the most important pieces of SUP gear you’ll ever own.

When you hit the water, the wind or current can carry your board away faster than you can swim. The leash prevents that from happening and can literally save your life.

At Hydrus, every inflatable paddleboard comes with a high-quality coiled leash for comfort and reliability, except our whitewater models, which require a different safety system. Coiled leashes stay out of the water while you paddle, reducing drag and keeping your setup clean and safe.

Quick Tip:

If you paddle on rivers or moving water, use a quick-release leash belt instead of attaching it to your ankle. This allows you to disconnect fast if your leash ever gets caught on debris.

(Check out our blog on SUP safety in moving water for more on this.)

Personal Flotation Device (PFD): Safety First, Always

This one’s non-negotiable. A PFD (personal flotation device) isn’t just a smart idea—it’s often required by law in many areas.

You have options depending on how you like to paddle:

  • Inflatable waist PFDs are lightweight, comfortable, and don’t restrict movement.

  • Traditional vests provide constant buoyancy and warmth, great for cooler days or rough water.

Even the best swimmers can get tired, tangled, or surprised by changing conditions. A PFD gives you extra time and security.

At Hydrus, we recommend pairing your SUP sessions with a U.S. Coast Guard-approved inflatable belt PFD—compact, effective, and easy to forget you’re even wearing it.

Bonus Tip:

Always wear your PFD on your body, not strapped to your board. It doesn’t help much if it’s floating ten feet away.

Pump and Proper Inflation Pressure

If you own an inflatable paddleboard, your pump is your best friend. Proper inflation is key to performance.

Too soft, and your board feels sluggish and unstable. Too firm, and you risk over-pressurizing the seams.

Hydrus inflatable SUPs are built with Armalight Air™ and X-Woven Drop Stitch materials, which means they perform best at 12–15 PSI. Use the included dual-action hand pump for easy inflation or upgrade to an electric SUP pump to save your arms for paddling.

Paradise Touring Inflatable Paddleboard

When you purchase a Hydrus inflatable paddleboard, you’re already getting most of the essential gear you need to get started—a high-quality coiled leash, tri-fin set, dual-action hand pump, and premium travel backpack are all included. You can also add on a paddle at a discounted price, giving you a complete, ready-to-paddle setup right out of the box.

Pro Tip:

When you’re done, store your pump out of direct sunlight and keep the hose coiled neatly. A cracked hose is one of the most common issues with cheap pumps—something you won’t deal with using Hydrus quality.

Paddle Fit and Adjustment: Don’t Guess It, Set It

The paddle might seem secondary to your board, but it’s what drives every stroke. Using the wrong length or weight can tire you out fast and throw off your balance.

Your paddle length should depend on your height and paddling style. Here’s a simplified version of the sizing chart we use at Hydrus to help you find the right fit:

If you’re new to SUP, start longer and adjust down as you gain comfort and control.

Hydrus Paddles to Know:

  • Ruckus Flyweight Carbon Paddle – ultra-light and ideal for racing or long sessions.

  • Tough Blade Carbon Paddle – built for power and durability in rough conditions.

  • Adjustable Carbon Fiber Paddle – perfect for families or sharing your setup.

With all Hydrus paddles, you'll feel the difference in every stroke.

Optional (But Awesome) Extras

Once you’ve covered the basics, a few accessories can take your experience from good to great.

  • Dry bag: Keep your keys, snacks, and phone safe from splashes or unexpected swims.

  • Deck cooler: Perfect for long paddles, picnics, or days at the lake. Hydrus deck coolers strap securely to your board and keep drinks, food, or even bait cold without sliding around. They’re built for stability, easy access, and all-day adventures.

  • Deck bungees or D-rings: Every Hydrus board comes equipped with these so you can secure your gear, cooler, or even a seat for your co-captain (furry or human).

  • SUP carry strap: Makes hauling your inflated board easier, especially if you’re walking a distance to the water.

  • UV protectant spray: Use a product like 303 Protectant at the end of each season to keep your board’s materials in top shape.

Little things like this make big adventures smoother and help you spend more time paddling, less time juggling gear.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple, Keep It Safe

The best SUP setup is the one that helps you focus on the fun, not the gear. If you’ve got your board, paddle, leash, and PFD, you’re 90% ready to go. Add a properly inflated board, a well-sized paddle, and a few personal touches like dry bags or sun protection, and you’ll have everything you need for an amazing day on the water.

Hydrus boards are designed for real paddlers, by real paddlers right here in the USA. We build gear that lasts, so you can spend less time worrying about what to buy and more time paddling, exploring, and laughing with friends and family.

So grab your leash, zip that PFD, and get ready for your next SUP adventure. The water’s waiting.
