Who Barracuda is for

Answering this honestly saves you time, money, and an exchange.
Great Fit If You
  • Advanced whitewater paddlers who want maximum board feedback and rigidity for technical river features
  • Paddlers transitioning from inflatable river boards (AXIS 98 or AXIS 88) to a true hardboard for serious play
  • Riders chasing freestyle river performance: surfing waves, holding lines through rapids, carving holes
  • Paddlers who store and transport in vehicles that fit a 10'6 hardboard
Not Right For You If
  • You want an inflatable river board with the convenience of pack-and-fly transport  → AXIS 98
  • You want a smaller, snappier inflatable freestyle river board  → AXIS 88
  • You're new to whitewater paddleboarding  → AXIS 98
  • You don't have indoor storage for a 10'6 hardboard

About This Board

Built for How You Paddle.

The Hydrus Barracuda is a composite hardboard SUP designed for advanced whitewater paddlers. 10 foot 6 inch by 31.5 inch, Armalight composite construction, 14 inch squash tail. Built for technical river riding: hole surfing, wave carving, holding lines through rapids that demand maximum board feedback.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the hardboard end of the Hydrus river family. The inflatable AXIS 98 (9'8) is the daily-driver river-touring board. The inflatable AXIS 88 (8'8) is the snappy inflatable freestyle option. Barracuda is for paddlers who want true hardboard rigidity, no pressure management, no inflatable flex compromise. The trade is storage and transport: hardboards don't pack into a backpack.

Honest fit: this is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each Barracuda is handmade in Eagle, Idaho. We build small batches when we have the right materials and shop time. Currently between batches; join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.

Designed by Jason Zawadzki, Nick Zawadzki, and World Champion Whitewater Paddler Barry Kennon. Lifetime warranty against defects in material and construction.

Ten Summers.
Built In.

Armalight composite shell

Proprietary composite construction. Ultra-durable, lightweight, designed for the impacts and abrasion of regular whitewater use. Holds rigidity through temperature swings that compromise standard composite hardboards.

Gore-Tex vent system

Integrated venting prevents delamination from heat and pressure changes. Critical for hardboards stored in hot vehicles or used at altitude where pressure differential stresses the bond.

14 inch squash tail

Wide squash tail at the back end. Provides secondary stability through carving turns and surf-style play. Allows the board to sit stably in standing waves and holes without spinning out.

Continuous rocker

Smooth nose-to-tail rocker line. Maintains glide on flat sections between rapids while keeping the nose up through whitewater features. No hard transition points that catch on river current.

Handmade in Eagle, Idaho

Each Barracuda is built by the Hydrus team in Eagle, Idaho. Limited Number Drop production model: small batches, environmentally conscious materials, full quality control on every board.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

This board is extremely stable and handles the water like no other. Payette lake is notorious for its waves and wind.

We love this thing. Half the time we're using it as an inflatable dock at the lake that we can jump off of or just relax on.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

Barracuda is the hardboard option; AXIS 98 is the inflatable. Barracuda gives you maximum rigidity and feedback (no air pressure to manage, no flex compromise), but storage and transport are hardboard-scale (no backpack pack-down). AXIS 98 trades a small amount of rigidity for the freedom to roll up and pack. If you have indoor storage and dedicated river days, Barracuda. If you fly to rivers or commute to launches in a small car, AXIS 98.
The Barracuda is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each one is handmade in Eagle, Idaho by the Hydrus team in small batches. We build when we have the right materials and shop time, then sell until the batch is gone. Join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.
Jason Zawadzki and Nick Zawadzki (Hydrus founders) co-designed the Barracuda with World Champion Whitewater Paddler Barry Kennon. The shape reflects Barry's input on river feature riding plus the Hydrus Armalight composite construction process.
Advanced whitewater paddlers who want maximum board feedback. The Barracuda rewards skill: precise edge work, weight transfer through carves, line reads at speed. If you're comfortable on the inflatable AXIS 98 in class II-III water and want to step up to a hardboard for technical play, Barracuda is built for that paddler.
Indoors out of direct sunlight is ideal. The Gore-Tex vent system handles normal temperature changes, but extended UV exposure damages any composite hardboard. A garage, basement, or shaded covered area works. Avoid leaving the board in a hot car for hours; pressure differential between vehicle interior and the venting system is what the vents are designed to relieve, but extreme heat plus pressure can still stress the composite over time.
