8 foot 8 inch length, 34.5 inch width. Snaps through tight whitewater pockets that longer boards bridge over.
20 lb board weight. Light enough to portage between rapids, snappy enough to pivot mid-feature.
Armalight Air with FusionWeave Dropstitch core. Holds rigidity through impacts that destroy standard inflatable rivers boards.
Hydrus click-in fin system. Ships with a 4.5 inch flexible river fin (default for shallow water and rocks). Tool-free swap.
Pressure-tested to 31 PSI. Rides best at 12 to 15 PSI for the right balance of stiffness and impact give.
Standing waves. The 8 foot 8 inch length locks into the face, short enough to pivot, stiff enough to hold when longer inflatables flush through.

About This Board

Built for How You Paddle.

The Hydrus AXIS 88 is the playboard. 8 foot 8 inch by 34.5 inch, Armalight Air construction, built for whitewater paddlers who want maximum maneuverability over straight-line tracking. Shorter than the AXIS 98 by a foot, snappier in the catch, lighter on the portage.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the technical play-focused river board. AXIS 98 is the river-touring board (carries gear, more forgiving, better for mixed sections + flat-water transitions). AXIS 88 is for paddlers who already know what they want from a river session: tight feature reads, hole surfing, wave riding, surf-style play.

The 88's compact length lets the board lock into a standing wave and hold it, the kind of river surfing most inflatable boards are simply too long to do.

Honest fit: not a beginner board. The 8 foot 8 inch length rewards experience. If you're new to whitewater paddleboarding or you want one board that handles everything (river days plus lake approach), the AXIS 98 is the right call. If you're transitioning from AXIS 98 to a more technical play-focused board, AXIS 88 is built for that next step.

Currently in pre-sale. Next batch ships Jun 15, 2026. Designed in Eagle, Idaho. Lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects.

Ten Summers.

Armalight Air shell

Heat-bonded 3-layer fusion composite. Lighter and stiffer per square inch than typical inflatable river boards at the same PSI. Holds rigidity through repeated impacts that destroy standard inflatables.

FusionWeave Dropstitch core

Densely-woven internal threads connect top and bottom skin. Reaches near-hardboard rigidity at 12 to 15 PSI without needing to chase the 31 PSI maximum.

Welded seams

Permanently bonded under heat, not chemically glued. Critical for whitewater use where rocks and impacts stress seams that fail first on chemically-glued boards.

Compact play shape

8 foot 8 inch length with 34.5 inch width. Short enough to spin in tight features, wide enough to stay stable on the surf line. Designed for hole surfing and wave riding, not flat-water tracking.

Hydrus click-in fin

Tool-free fin swap. Ships with a 4.5 inch flexible river fin (default for shallow water and rocks); 9 inch touring fin available for occasional flat-water use.

I have had 4 Hydrus hard boards and the Axis 8'8" is my 1st inflatable from them. It feels unlike any other iSUP I have tried.

I finally have my Hydrus Axis 98! By far the best river paddle board. Indestructible frame and so effective in the rapids.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

We'll Tell You No

If Hydrus isn't right for your water, weight, or goals, we'll say so and point you elsewhere. Half the gear on the market is wrong for the person buying it.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

AXIS 98 is the river-touring board; AXIS 88 is the freestyle playboard. AXIS 98 (9'8 by 35.5 inch) tracks faster, carries more gear, and is more forgiving. Better for mixed sections, fishing, and beginner river paddlers. AXIS 88 (8'8 by 34.5 inch) is shorter, more agile, and built for tight rapids and surf-style play. If you're not sure which you want, choose AXIS 98 (it does more things well). AXIS 88 is for paddlers who already know they want the technical playboard.
Yes, but it's not optimized for it. The 8'8 inch length tracks slower than the AXIS 98 or any touring board. For paddlers who occasionally need to cross a lake to access a river run, the 9 inch touring fin (sold separately or available with the click-in fin set) helps. For regular flat-water paddling, the AXIS 98 or Paradise is the better daily driver.
Each Hydrus board is built in small batches. We're between batches; the next AXIS 88 batch ships Jun 15, 2026. Pre-sale pricing reflects the wait. Place your order to lock in the current price and reserve a spot in the next production run.
Total capacity is 300 lb, so weight isn't the limiting factor for most paddlers. The constraint is balance: a 220 lb paddler will find AXIS 88 less stable than the wider 35.5 inch AXIS 98. If you're over 220 lb and want a river board, AXIS 98 is the better fit. AXIS 88 is built for paddlers who value maneuverability over the extra deck width.
12 to 15 PSI for typical whitewater use. Pressure-tested to 31 PSI but you do not need that much; the FusionWeave Dropstitch core gets you to hardboard-class rigidity well below the max. Higher pressure adds rigidity but reduces impact forgiveness on rock contact.
