Who Elysium Expedition is for

Answering this honestly saves you time, money, and an exchange.
Great Fit If You
  • Distance paddlers logging serious mileage who want hardboard rigidity over inflatable convenience
  • Expedition paddlers running multi-day swift-water trips with gear loaded on the deck
  • Flat-water racers competing on hardboard-only race lines
  • Paddlers who store and transport hardboards (vehicle racks, garage, hardboard-friendly home setup)
Not Right For You If
  • You want an inflatable touring board for pack-and-fly transport  → Paradise
  • You want race-focused inflatable speed without hardboard storage logistics  → Elysium Air
  • You want a faster narrower inflatable touring board  → Paradise X
  • You don't have indoor storage or a vehicle rack for a 12'6 to 14 foot hardboard

The short version

The honest version.

The Hydrus Elysium Expedition is the composite hardboard touring SUP. Available in multiple sizes spanning 12 foot 6 inch and 14 foot lengths in widths from 25 to 29 inches, built for distance paddlers and expedition use. Sharp piercing bow for cutting through chop, rounded bottom front-third for breaking water tension, sharp rails through the rear half for tracking under speed.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the hardboard touring sibling of the inflatable Paradise (and the narrower Paradise X). The hardboard wins on absolute rigidity: no air pressure to manage, no flex compromise. The trade is storage and transport: hardboards live in racks and garages, not backpacks. For paddlers who race on hardboard-only race lines or who run multi-day swift-water expeditions where pack-down isn't a constraint, the Elysium Expedition is the right call.

Honest fit: this is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each Elysium Expedition is handmade in Eagle, Idaho. Currently between batches; join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens. Custom sizing available: contact Hydrus directly for paddler-specific dimensions.

Designed by Jason Zawadzki and the Hydrus team. Lifetime warranty against defects in material and construction.

How it's built

Ten summers in,
still drum-tight.

Armalight composite shell

Proprietary composite construction. Lightweight and stiff for distance paddling. Holds rigidity through long sessions and temperature swings that compromise standard composite hardboards.

Sharp piercing bow

Front profile cuts through chop and flat water with minimal drag. Maintains glide efficiency through wave action that slows blunter-bowed boards.

Rounded front-third bottom

Breaks water tension at the catch. Allows the board to lift onto pace without bow-heavy plowing through the first 30 percent of the deck.

Sharp-rail rear half

Tracks straight under sustained pace. Sharp rails along the back half of the board carve cleanly through the water rather than skipping or sliding under load.

Multi-size availability

12'6 by 27, 12'6 by 29, 14 by 25, 14 by 27 inch sizes plus custom. Pick the size for your weight, use case, and water conditions. Wider deck for stability with gear; narrower deck for speed.

If you're on the fence about this board, do yourself a favor. I have not fallen off this board even while paddling in wavy and rough ocean waters.

I knew this board was going to be good but after receiving it I was blown away. The color, style, stability and speed are fantastic.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

This board is extremely stable and handles the water like no other. Payette lake is notorious for its waves and wind.

It's fast, and surprisingly stable once I got used to the narrower profile. The quality has been fantastic.

We love this thing. Half the time we're using it as an inflatable dock at the lake that we can jump off of or just relax on.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

Length determines top speed and tracking. 14 foot is the touring + race option: longer waterline carries more pace over distance, holds straight tracking through chop and current. 12'6 is the all-around expedition option: still fast, easier to maneuver, fits more vehicles. For competitive racing or 15+ mile days, 14 foot. For mixed expedition use including portaging, 12'6.
Width determines stability vs speed. 25 inch is the race width: maximum speed, requires intermediate-to-advanced balance. 27 inch is the all-around width: still fast, more forgiving. 29 inch is the stable expedition width: handles loaded gear, choppy water, fishing setups while still tracking efficiently. Lighter paddlers (under 175 lb) tend toward narrower; paddlers above 200 lb or with gear loads tend toward wider.
Yes. Select the Custom Size variant at checkout and contact Hydrus to specify your dimensions. We'll build to spec when the next batch opens. Custom sizing is for paddlers whose weight, use case, or water conditions don't fit a standard size. Typically taller paddlers needing extra length or specific width-to-length ratios for race classes.
Limited Number Drop production model. Each Elysium Expedition is handmade in Eagle, Idaho by the Hydrus team in small batches. We build when we have the right materials and shop time, then sell until the batch is gone. Join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.
Both are performance touring boards. Elysium Expedition is the hardboard option with multiple size choices and custom sizing. Paradise X is the inflatable option (13'3 by 28.5 inch only). Hardboard wins on absolute rigidity and size flexibility; inflatable wins on transport convenience (rolls into a backpack) and impact forgiveness. For paddlers with hardboard storage and transport, Elysium Expedition. For paddlers who fly to races or commute in small vehicles, Paradise X.
