Who Steppin Razor is for

Answering this honestly saves you time, money, and an exchange.
Great Fit If You
  • Advanced whitewater paddlers chasing tight feature riding, hole surfing, and play boating on technical rivers
  • Riders transitioning from inflatable river boards (AXIS 88) to a hard surfboard for maximum responsiveness
  • Lighter and intermediate paddlers who find KING DUB too voluminous and want quicker maneuverability
  • Skilled riders who can leverage less volume for sharper edge control and foot steering
Not Right For You If
  • You're new to whitewater paddleboarding  → AXIS 98
  • You want more volume and forgiveness with a similar river-play shape  → KING DUB
  • You want an inflatable freestyle river board for travel and impact forgiveness  → AXIS 88
  • You don't have indoor storage for a hard surfboard

The short version

The honest version.

The Hydrus Steppin Razor is a compact composite hardboard built for river freestyle, river play, and surf paddleboarding. 8 foot 6 inch by 34.5 inch HV (223L volume), designed for advanced whitewater paddlers chasing tight feature riding and hole surfing on technical rivers.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the lighter, snappier sibling of the KING DUB 8'8 (250L volume). The reduced volume makes the Razor more maneuverable, quicker through the water, and more sensitive to edge control and foot steering. Same proven down-river / river-play rocker as KING DUB; the Razor just delivers it in a tighter package.

Honest fit: this is for advanced river paddlers. The lower volume rewards skill. Paddlers under roughly 175 lb leverage it well; heavier paddlers and beginner whitewater riders typically prefer the KING DUB's extra volume and forgiveness. If you're new to whitewater paddleboarding, the inflatable AXIS 98 is the right starting point.

This is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each Steppin Razor is hand-built in Eagle, Idaho to your specifications and ships within 2 to 4 weeks of order placement. Lifetime warranty against defects in material and construction.

How it's built

Ten summers in,
still drum-tight.

Compact play shape

8 foot 6 inch length, 34.5 inch width, 223L volume. Compact enough to spin in tight features, voluminous enough to stay stable on the surf line. Tuned for river play, not flat-water tracking.

Down-river / river-play rocker

Same proven rocker line as KING DUB 8'8. Holds the nose up through whitewater features while maintaining glide between rapids. Optimized for moving water, not flat lakes.

Armalight composite shell

Hard-surfboard rigidity with composite durability. Holds rails through aggressive carving without the chip-and-crack failure mode that ends typical foam-core river boards.

Designed by world-class paddlers

Jason Zawadzki, Nick Zawadzki, and World Champion Whitewater Paddler Barry Kennon co-designed the Razor. Real river-feature feedback baked into shape, rocker, and rail geometry.

Hand-built in Eagle, Idaho

Each Steppin Razor is built by the Hydrus team. Limited Number Drop production model. Order placement triggers a 2 to 4 week build cycle to your specifications.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

This board is extremely stable and handles the water like no other. Payette lake is notorious for its waves and wind.

We love this thing. Half the time we're using it as an inflatable dock at the lake that we can jump off of or just relax on.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

Both are river-play hardboards with the same proven rocker. KING DUB is the longer, more voluminous option (8.8 by 34.5 inch, 250L). More forgiving, better for heavier paddlers, more stable for newer riders. Steppin Razor is the compact option (8.6 by 34.5 inch, 223L). Lighter, snappier, more sensitive to skilled edge control and foot steering. If you're under 175 lb and skilled, Razor. If you're heavier or want extra forgiveness, KING DUB.
Limited Number Drop production model. Each Steppin Razor is hand-built in Eagle, Idaho by the Hydrus team. Order placement triggers a build cycle. Current ship time is 2 to 4 weeks from order date once you're off the waitlist.
Yes. Contact Hydrus directly to discuss sizing, volume adjustments, or shape variations. The standard 8'6 by 34.5 inch HV (223L) is the catalog default, but the team can build to spec when standard sizes don't fit your weight, use case, or river conditions.
Both are river freestyle boards. Steppin Razor (8'6, 223L composite hardboard) is the hardboard option for advanced paddlers chasing maximum rigidity and feedback. AXIS 88 (8'8 by 34.5 inflatable) is the inflatable option for paddlers who want similar dimensions with travel convenience and impact forgiveness. Razor wins on rigidity; AXIS 88 wins on portability and durability against rocks.
Indoors out of direct sunlight. The composite shell handles normal temperature changes but extended UV damages any hardboard over time. A garage, basement, or shaded covered area works. Hard surfboards live in racks; rolled-up storage isn't an option.
