Who UFO is for

Answering this honestly saves you time, money, and an exchange.
Great Fit If You
  • Advanced river paddlers chasing wave catching, quick turns, and downriver play in tight features
  • Riders transitioning from longer river hardboards (KING DUB) to a shorter, more responsive shape
  • Paddlers with mixed river / surf use cases who want one hardboard that does both
  • Lighter and intermediate paddlers who can leverage less length for sharper response
Not Right For You If
  • You're new to whitewater paddleboarding  → AXIS 98
  • You want more length and tracking for downriver flat sections between rapids  → KING DUB
  • You want a similar shape in an inflatable for travel and impact forgiveness  → AXIS 88
  • You want a dedicated ocean paddle surfboard rather than a river-surf hybrid  → Drop Rail SCUD

The short version

The honest version.

The Hydrus UFO is a compact composite hardboard built for downriver play and surf. 7 foot 11 inch length, three volume options (205L to 235L) for paddler weight and water condition matching. Designed for advanced river paddlers chasing wave catching and quick turns without sacrificing downriver capability.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the shorter, snappier alternative to the KING DUB 8'8. The reduced length makes the UFO quicker through wave faces and tighter on river features, while the multi-size volume range keeps it stable enough for paddlers who want a true hard surfboard feel. Both share the Hydrus down-river / river-play DNA.

Honest fit: this is for advanced river paddlers. The compact shape rewards skill and active foot steering. If you're new to whitewater paddleboarding, the inflatable AXIS 98 is the right starting point. If you want a longer, more forgiving river hardboard, KING DUB. If you want this shape in an inflatable for travel, AXIS 88.

This is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each UFO is hand-built in Eagle, Idaho. Currently between batches; join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens. Lifetime warranty against defects in material and construction.

How it's built

Ten summers in,
still drum-tight.

Compact downriver shape

7 foot 11 inch length tuned for wave catching and quick turns. Holds tracking between rapids while staying responsive on technical features.

Multi-volume options

205L, 220L, 235L volume tiers. Lighter paddlers and tighter wave conditions favor 205L. Heavier paddlers or those wanting extra stability favor 235L. The 220L middle option suits most paddlers in mixed conditions.

Armalight composite shell

Hard-surfboard rigidity with composite durability. Holds rails through aggressive carving without the chip-and-crack failure mode of typical foam-core river boards.

Designed by river riders

Shape input from riders Luke Spencer, Luke Evans, and Barry Kennon. Real wave-catching and downriver-feature feedback baked into rocker, rail, and tail geometry.

Hand-built in Eagle, Idaho

Each UFO is built by the Hydrus team. Limited Number Drop production model: small batches, environmentally conscious materials, full quality control.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

We love this thing. Half the time we're using it as an inflatable dock at the lake that we can jump off of or just relax on.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

Both are river-play hardboards. UFO (7'11) is shorter and quicker. KING DUB (8'8) is longer and more forgiving, with better tracking between rapids. UFO catches waves more easily and executes quicker turns; KING DUB carries more glide between river features. Lighter paddlers chasing wave catching tend toward UFO. Heavier paddlers or those wanting more downriver stability tend toward KING DUB.
Volume matches paddler weight and water conditions. 205L (32.5 inch wide) suits paddlers under 175 lb in skilled wave conditions. 220L (33.5 inch) is the all-around option for most paddlers in mixed downriver and play conditions. 235L (34.5 inch) suits heavier paddlers or anyone wanting extra stability margin. Lighter and more skilled riders go narrower; heavier or beginner-to-intermediate riders go wider.
Limited Number Drop production model. Each UFO is hand-built in Eagle, Idaho by the Hydrus team in small batches. We build when we have the right materials and shop time, then sell until the batch is gone. Join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.
Yes, but it's primarily tuned for river play and downriver use. The shape catches waves on rivers and on stationary river waves. For dedicated ocean paddle surfing on real waves, the Drop Rail SCUD (6'6 to 6'8) is the better fit. Shorter, lower volume, true short-board feel. UFO is the river-first hybrid; SCUD is the ocean-first option.
Indoors out of direct sunlight is ideal. The composite shell handles normal temperature changes; UV exposure damages any hardboard over time. A garage, basement, or shaded covered area works. Hard surfboards live in racks; rolled-up storage isn't an option.
