Who Mad Max is for

Answering this honestly saves you time, money, and an exchange.
Great Fit If You
  • Competitive SUP racers competing in elite-class regional, national, or international events
  • Paddlers who race on hardboard-only race lines and need true race-class rigidity
  • Downwind racers chasing top-end speed across open water and ocean conditions
  • Paddlers transitioning from inflatable race boards (Elysium Air) to a hardboard for race-day rigidity
Not Right For You If
  • You want race-grade speed without hardboard storage and transport  → Elysium Air
  • You want a multi-purpose touring hardboard rather than a pure race board  → Elysium Expedition
  • You want a fast inflatable touring board with broader use cases  → Paradise X
  • You don't have indoor storage for a 12'6 to 14 foot hardboard

The short version

The honest version.

The Hydrus Mad Max is the elite race hardboard. Composite construction in 12'6 and 14 foot lengths across race-class widths from 22 to 28 inches. Built to compete with the world's fastest race boards while solving the durability problem that ends most ultralight race boards by season three.

Where it sits in the lineup: this is the hardboard race sibling of the inflatable Elysium Air. Both are race-focused; both target competitive paddlers. Mad Max wins on absolute hardboard rigidity. Elysium Air wins on transport (rolls into a backpack for race travel). For paddlers competing on hardboard-only race lines or who race locally without travel constraints, Mad Max is the right call.

Honest fit: this is a Limited Number Drop production board. Each Mad Max is handmade in Eagle, Idaho. Currently between batches; join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.

Designed by Jason Zawadzki and the Hydrus team with input from elite racers Joe Threadgil and Brett Saquid. Lifetime warranty against defects in material and construction.

How it's built

Ten summers in,
still drum-tight.

Carbon-Armalight composite

Race-grade composite shell with carbon reinforcement. Solves the ultralight-race-board fragility problem: race-class rigidity without the chip-and-crack failure mode that ends most pure-carbon boards inside one season.

Race-tested swift-water shape

Hull profile shaped through real race-day feedback. Holds line under sustained pace through flat-water sprints, downwind chop, and swift-water sections.

Multi-size availability

12'6 by 26 inch, 12'6 by 28 inch, 14 by 22 inch, 14 by 24 inch. Pick the size for your race class regulations and paddler weight. Lighter paddlers and tighter race classes go narrower; bigger paddlers go wider.

Handmade in Eagle, Idaho

Each Mad Max is built by the Hydrus team. Limited Number Drop production model: small batches, environmentally conscious materials, full quality control.

Designed with elite-racer input

Joe Threadgil and Brett Saquid (competitive SUP racers) co-designed the shape with Jason Zawadzki. Race-day input baked into rocker, rail, and tail geometry.

The Joyride is by far the best board I have ever owned. I feel completely at ease in the ocean waves or the shallow waters of the mangroves.

The Hydrus Paradise tracks and glides very well for an inflatable paddle board. It's easy to sprint between 5-6 mph on flat water.

This board is extremely stable and handles the water like no other. Payette lake is notorious for its waves and wind.

We love this thing. Half the time we're using it as an inflatable dock at the lake that we can jump off of or just relax on.

I have had 4 Hydrus hard boards and the Axis 8'8" is my 1st inflatable from them. It feels unlike any other iSUP I have tried.

Super stiff and stable, tracks really well and has more maneuverability than I'd have expected for its size. The material and build looks bombproof.

Quick Answers

Common Questions About This Board.

Both are race-focused. Mad Max is the hardboard option; Elysium Air is the inflatable option. Mad Max wins on absolute rigidity (no air pressure, no inflatable flex). Elysium Air wins on transport (rolls into a backpack, fits checked luggage). For paddlers competing locally on hardboard-only race lines, Mad Max. For paddlers who fly to race events, Elysium Air.
Limited Number Drop production model. Each Mad Max is handmade in Eagle, Idaho by the Hydrus team in small batches. We build when we have the right materials and shop time, then sell until the batch is gone. Join the waitlist to be notified when the next production run opens.
14 foot is the elite-class race length: longer waterline carries more pace over distance, holds straight tracking under sustained sprint. 12'6 is the all-around race length: still fast, more maneuverable, fits more race classes that exclude 14 foot. For competitive racing in 14-foot classes, choose 14. For mixed race classes including 12'6 events, choose 12'6.
Width determines stability vs speed. The narrowest options (22 and 26 inch) are race-class widths that reward intermediate-to-advanced balance and produce maximum top-end speed. The wider options (24 and 28 inch) are more forgiving for race-day conditions or paddlers who want a margin of stability. Lighter paddlers tend toward narrower; heavier paddlers and chop-heavy races tend toward wider.
Pure carbon race boards win on weight but lose on durability. They chip on rocks, crack on truck-bed knocks, and often don't survive a full race season of regular use. Carbon-Armalight pairs carbon reinforcement with the Hydrus Armalight composite for hardboard rigidity AND real-world durability. The trade is a small weight penalty (a few ounces) for a board that lasts seasons instead of months.
